Summary

The virtualization of systems, products and processes is a central component of digitalization in industrial manufacturing. The concept of digital twins is playing an increasingly important role here: Digital twins create a digital image of the real objects of the industrial value-added process and enable an IT-based description of machines over their life cycle.

The white paper “Digital Twins in the Equipment Life Cycle” summarizes the concepts for digital twins collected and implemented in the DTZ: In addition to the conceptual basics of digital twins in the machine life cycle, examples of their application in industrial practice will be presented. The selection of the contributions was based on the respective technical background of the authors: On the one hand, the focus is on applications in the development and commissioning phase, and on the other hand on the use in the operation and maintenance phase of machines. An article on the basic categorization of digital twins, the presentation of relevant standards and a bibliography for further information on digital dwins round off the report.
