Digital twin optimises industrial energy supply

Flagship project “Digital Energy Twin”: eleven partners build digital twins for industrial energy supply with the simulation software twin.

The kick-off meeting of the four-year flagship project “Digital Energy Twin”, coordinated by AEE INTEC, took place on 2 December 2019 in Leoben/Hinterberg at the headquarters of AT & S Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik Aktiengesellschaft. Alongside AT & S and Eberle Automatische Systeme GmbH & Co KG, nine Austrian partners and one German partner from digital research, energy research and industry are on board. The project, funded by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund, supports industry in optimising the design and operation of its energy supply systems. For the first time, solutions are also to be found for the tension between a volatile renewable energy supply and its efficient use for fluctuating energy demand at process level in industry.

By applying the digital twin method, detailed models are developed and validated for selected energy-relevant processes and renewable technologies in industry. The focus is on developing an optimisation approach based on standardised examples as well as on real applications from manufacturing industry. The aim is to design the resulting tools in a modular and flexible way, in order to lower the costs and investment risks of renewable energy systems on the one hand and thereby significantly increase their share in industry on the other. In addition, the method is to be used as an entirely new training approach, “Energy Manager 4.0”.

With the help of digifai’s innovative simulation software twin, it becomes possible for the first time to simulate — and subsequently optimise — the complex interplay between a wide range of physical domains in combination with real control components and SCADA systems.
